In Detail

The art of block paving lies in the preparation and the pattern. At White & Sons, our master pavers have decades of experience laying complex patterns including 90-degree herringbone, 45-degree herringbone, stretcher bond, basket weave, and bespoke circular designs. Every project starts with a detailed design consultation where we help you choose from hundreds of block styles, colours, and textures. We work with leading UK manufacturers including Marshalls (Drivesett Savanna, Tegula, Argent), Brett (Alpha Flow, Omega Flow), and Tobermore (Shannon, Tegula). For environmentally conscious installations, we offer permeable block paving systems that allow rainwater to drain directly through the surface, eliminating the need for separate drainage and planning permission.

Block Paving FAQ

90-degree herringbone is the strongest pattern for driveways as it interlocks the blocks under vehicle loads. We also recommend 45-degree herringbone for a slightly different aesthetic. Stretcher bond and basket weave are better suited to patios and pathways where vehicle loading is lighter.

Keeping the joints well filled is the key to preventing weeds. We finish every driveway so the joints are properly sealed, and we'll give you simple advice on keeping them topped up over time so your paving stays looking its best.

Yes. For driveways that take regular heavy vehicle access, we specify the right heavy-duty blocks and preparation for the job. We'll assess how your driveway will be used and recommend the best solution during your survey.

One of the great advantages of block paving is that an individual block can be lifted and replaced if it's ever damaged — without affecting the surrounding area. This makes repairs simple and cost-effective compared to other surfaces.

If you use standard (impermeable) block paving over an area greater than 5 square metres, you will need either planning permission or a SUDS-compliant drainage solution. We offer permeable block paving systems that allow water to drain through the surface, avoiding the need for planning permission entirely.
