New Drains & Drainage
SUDS compliant drainage systems, soakaways, and foul drains.
About Our New Drains & Drainage Service
A surface is only as good as what lies beneath. We provide comprehensive drainage solutions including SUDS-compliant soakaways, linear channel drains, ACO drains, and complete foul drainage connections. Since 2008, all new impermeable driveways over 5 square metres require planning permission unless adequate drainage is provided. Our team designs and installs compliant systems that satisfy local planning requirements while protecting your property from surface water flooding. We also install new foul drainage runs, inspection chambers, and connections to public sewers.
In Detail
Drainage is the invisible infrastructure that protects your home from flooding and subsidence. Since 2008, UK planning regulations require that any new impermeable driveway over 5 square metres must include Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) — or you need full planning permission. White & Sons designs and installs drainage systems that satisfy these requirements while providing genuine long-term flood protection. Our surface water solutions include soakaways (underground chambers that allow water to percolate into the ground), linear channel drains (ACO drains), slot drains, and permeable paving borders. For foul drainage, we install new drainage runs, inspection chambers, and connections to the public sewer. All our drainage work is designed to Building Regulation Part H standards and, where required, signed off by Building Control. We also offer CCTV drain surveys to assess existing drainage before starting any project.

New Drains & Drainage FAQ
SUDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) are designed to manage surface water runoff in a way that mimics natural drainage. Since 2008, all new impermeable driveways over 5 square metres require either SUDS or full planning permission. White & Sons includes SUDS design in every driveway quotation.
A soakaway is an underground chamber (either rubble-filled or plastic crate) that collects surface water and allows it to slowly percolate into the surrounding ground. The size of soakaway required depends on the surface area draining into it and the porosity of your soil. We calculate this during our site survey.
Surface water should ideally drain into a soakaway or watercourse, not the public sewer. However, where ground conditions prevent soakaway use, we can apply to your water company for permission to connect to the surface water sewer. Connection to the foul sewer for surface water is not permitted.
We offer CCTV drain surveys that inspect the condition and capacity of your existing drainage system. This is particularly important before adding additional surface area that will increase runoff volume. Any issues such as blockages, collapsed pipes, or inadequate capacity will be identified and addressed.
